Ramsey Nunnery

After the election of Ethelstan as the fourth Abbot of Ramsey, the Abbey chronicler mentions that the Bishop may have advised Canute to build another church in honour of the holy Trinity, at Ramsey, near the former one, on the same plan but a little differing in size, ( the money being supplied from the Royal Treasury) in which might be assembled a company of females for carrying on the continued worship of God, as the college of men in the other monastery did.

But by the providence of God the latter proposition was not carried out, it being prudently considered, that disadvantages might arise from the vicinity of the two sexes.

The crypt however, which was built under the great altar of that church, remains uninjured in our cemetery to this day, a witness and memorial of the building. (ref 7)
